This is the Year You Write Your Memoir!
September 2026 I will be taking on 8 clients for a 7 month experience called This is the Year You Write Your Memoir. Have you always wanted to write a memoir, but just haven't been sure how to start? Or worse, how to finish? Are you a writer who wants to write, but doesn't always make the time and could use some support, guidance and accountability? Then this program might be for you.
Though I have worked with writers one on one I believe being a cohort and having a supportive community can be an accelerator. The process requires 10 hours a week. We will meet online as a whole cohort twice a month for 1.5 hours each where I will guide us through some exercises to get your where you need to be. Once a month you will have a check in with your accountabilibuddy and once a month we will meet 1 on 1. The rest of the time will be dedicated to you doing the writing.

The Back story:
In 2010 when I self published my first book, my friend Nisha was that person for me. I had a stack of poetry from a year of performing at the Seattle Poetry Slam, but I had no idea what steps to take to go from being a writer to becoming a published author. I took some classes. I learned how to write query letters. But I realized that for my poetry I didn't feel comfortable giving up autonomy to a publisher. I wanted to have 100% creative control from the cover to the layout. Nisha had recently self published her book so we met and she showed me how she did it. She walked me through everything step by step.
Fast forward. After that book, God, Hair, Love and America, I wrote and self published two more collections of poetry and two children's books, learning more each time. Then I worked with a group of youth through Global Visionaries to write and produce and anthology of poetry about their experiences in Guatemala. First I designed curriculum and facilitated five writing workshops then I worked with a group of students who made the anthology into their senior project. Together we edited, put together the layout and created the cover art. Once we published it, we set it up so that all proceed went toward the scholarship fund for future youth traveling to Guatemala. In 2024 I worked with Hinton Publishing to publish a hybrid memoir/ anthology of my work. It won a bronze medal in the Ippy Awards in the category of Creative Non Fiction.
While I have a lot to share around publishing, for me the best part of being a book doula is actually supporting people to write their books. Whether your goal is to publish or not, there is value in finishing the work. I have already helped several people finish their books and I love doing it. Take the first step and reach out so that this can be the year you write your memoir.
